Millions of people the world over enjoy watching videos of ‘celebrity’ cats, which in turn generates a fair amount of cash for any lowly human lucky enough to have filmed a cat video that subsequently goes viral. But is capturing a mega-successful cat clip dependent entirely upon the whims of fate, or could you somehow guide the wheel of fortune and transform your very own loveable moggy into an Internet Sensation? Here’s the good news: according to Patricia Carlin – author of How to Make Your Cat an Internet Celebrity – it’s well within the realms of possibility for any humble cat servant to end up with a viral cat video on their hands!
How to Make Your Cat an Internet Celebrity is due for publication in the UK on 1st April 2014, and is available for pre-order from Amazon at the moment for £8.77. However, I was sent a copy for review, a copy which is now up for grabs as a giveaway prize – read on to find out how to enter…
I must admit that when I was initially offered this book to review I was concerned it may be exploitative, but it’s not at all. In fact it’s a very, very funny take on the internet cat phenomenon, which also pokes a stick in the eye of the ‘Get Rich Quick’ self-help book genre, and even manages to get the spay/neuter message across while doing so – which impressed me no end! It’s also packed full of high-quality cat photos, courtesy of Dustin Fenstermacher – whose work has appeared in the New York Times and other estimable publications.
The book features tips on assessing your cat’s financial potential by identifying his/her ‘type': if you share your home with a Sweet Baby Kitten or a Clown, your videos will pretty much sell themselves, and your bank balance will react accordingly; but don’t despair if you live with a Badass or a Moron – these problems are not insurmountable, and can even work to your advantage.
Of course, any potential feline star will also need a decent stage name – this thorny issue is easily solved by using the handy conversion table provided. For example: a good name for a white cat seeking international stardom would be ‘Snowball’, but convert this to ‘Ghostface Killah’, and the world’s your oyster.
Unfortunately, once your cat hits the big time, you are likely to find yourself dealing with some of the many pitfalls of fame. Luckily, How to Make Your Cat an Internet Celebrity also contains plenty of advice about how best to handle the downsides of stardom, such as hassle from the paparazzi and the perils of catnip addiction.
In amongst all the amusing nonsense you’ll also find some genuinely useful information on how to shoot and edit successful videos, which could be applied to any subject matter – handy if your cat steadfastly refuses to play ball and help you on your way to financial freedom!
I already have plenty of feline divas sharing my living space, so I’m loath to add global stardom into an already volatile mix. Hence I’m offering my review copy of How to Make Your Cat an Internet Celebrity as a giveaway prize. (I promise you it’s still in good nick – no muddy paw prints or biscuit crumbs besmirch its pristine pages.) To enter, simply leave a comment below – entries from the UK only, please!
