Dave Burgess, the designer maker behind The Nosuch Disco, was inspired to create his popular Fat Kitty character by a real life plus-size puss called Oscar.
Now, before anyone’s tempted to contact Dave and inform him about the health risks attached to feline obesity I should let you know that Oscar is not Dave’s cat (he belongs to a neighbour), and so Dave has no control over Oscar’s diet. I asked Dave if Oscar’s owners are aware of the Fat Kitty character their cat has inspired. Apparently not, and Dave says ‘I’m slightly terrified that they may stumble across it on the internet and come storming over demanding royalties or get a restraining order on me’!
Oscar has been calling round to Dave’s place ‘for a fuss and a snooze’ for several years now, so the two boys are good friends. Dave sees their relationship as ‘a bromance of sorts’ and wishes they ‘could go to football matches and for drinks in the local pub.’ But unfortunately this can never be as Oscar’s ‘a lairy sort of character, so he can’t be around people in case someone gets injured.’
I wondered how Oscar feels about his considerable girth, and whether he gets touchy about his weight problem. According to Dave, ‘Oscar’s very proud to be a Fat Kitty, he has his own song: “I am what I am, I’m a Fat Kitty, I can’t wipe my own bum, It’s very shi…” well you get the idea.’
So it looks like Oscar’s a budding song writer as well as an artist’s muse – what a talented cat! (But someone does need to tell him to cut down on the pie consumption.)
