Fair Trade Cat Gifts from Shared Earth

Shared Earth are a company who sell handmade and eco-friendly fair trade gifts.  They aim to improve the livelihoods of people in developing countries, support local communities and keep traditional skills alive – all very good reasons to shop there.  And guess what?  They just happen to stock a range of cat-inspired homewares and accessories.  Hurrah!  Here’s a selection:

Cat Cushions by Helkatdesign

I like the contrast between the soft hessian fabric and the elegant cat silhouettes on these handprinted cushions by Wiltshire-based Helkatdesign.  Each 43cm x 33cm cushion has a bespoke back featuring more cats and ribbon detailing.

These cushions are available for £38.03 from the Helkatdesign Etsy Shop.  Delivery is free within the UK.

Etsy Find – Kitty Valentine

If you like your art a little on the dark side, then you’ll love the work of  London-based artist Kitty Valentine.  These two prints ‘Crow Girl with Cat’ (above) and ‘Fox Girl with Cat’ (below) are from Kitty’s Victorian Mischief project.  They were created by painting directly onto Edwardian postcards of stage actresses, and reflect Kitty’s fascination with the underlying themes of transformation and menace which run through children’s fairy tales.

For those not fully in touch with their inner goth, there’s the splendid Pierrot Kitty Pearly Queen Cushion, inspired by the working class London tradition of Pearly Kings and Queens, who wear black suits elaborately decorated with pearl buttons and say ‘Gor blimey, guv!’ a lot.  (I may have made that last bit up.)

Kitty’s work is available from her Etsy shop, Foxglove Pearly.  Prints – matted on a black card mount – are £10.47, and cushions are £42.54.

Etsy Find – Nicola Rowland

Have a look at these lovely goodies featuring a gang of cat/human hybrids.  This lot could almost be slightly creepy, but somehow just look so right that it’s hard not to find them endearing.

There’s the Kitty Kate Sticker Set:

The Taco Kitty Tote Bag:

The Love Kitty Coaster:

And my personal favourite, the Boyfriend & Girlfriend Pillow Set:

Or for those who prefer their cats on all fours, there’s The Cat Tea Towel:

All these lovely items can be purchased at Nicola Rowland’s Etsy Shop.

Nicola is a graphic designer and illustrator based in Manchester.  Nicola’s range also includes original drawings, cards, pocket mirrors, jewellery and mugs.  In addition to cats, her designs feature capybaras, pugs, foxes, birds and humans.

Nicola also sells Pocket Girlfriends and Pocket Manfriends.  I’m particularly taken with Kenneth; think it’s the eyebrows that do it for me.

Nicola has a blog, which makes for an entertaining read, but is well worth a visit for the spectacular birthday cake alone.
